kicking and dreaming

This morning I was on the train reading Women's Health magazine. I got to an article about a young women's soccer team in Afghanistan that has to fight for the right to play. Their story is powerful and moving. Although the Taliban was forced out of power 10 years ago, the barriers for women in sports remain monumental. The players, who range in age from 16 to 24, are up against widespread resentment from their relatives and neighbors, and threats from men who disapprove of women playing sports. The story made me appreciate all the wonderful rights I have as an American and the struggle that my ancestors fought for my freedom. I hope to never take that for granted.
