my vogue story

studio space, 2004

Anyone who knows me, knows that I am a magazine junkie and a devoted Vogue reader. I've had a subscription for about seven years now. I got an email awhile back asking readers to submit their Vogue stories for a chance for it to appear in the April issue. I could be in Vogue!! Why not? So, here's my story. I first starting reading Vogue my last year of college. I'm a late-bloomer. What can I say? I was in the Visual Communications program at Washington University in St. Louis, MO and just beginning to delve into my senior thesis project. My focus was to be in advertising, but then I saw the November 2003 issue of Vogue and everything changed. I couldn't throw away two years of study, but I managed to change my entire thesis project to incorporate my new fascination with fashion and magazine/publication/print design. I created a book exploring fashion advertising and branding. After I graduated, I immediately moved to New York and spent the entire summer living off of Ramen noodles. I trekked my portfolio everywhere, I met alumni, friends of friends and even walked right into the Condé Nast building hoping that I could drop my portfolio off with the human resources department. I can laugh at that now. I mean, I was completely naive. Jump six years later, I'm now working at as the associate art director with an amazing art department at magazine that I love. All because of Vogue!
